(This is a little something personal that I started jotting down. I just wanted to share real quick, if I even can properly express, how much Mac Miller has meant to me over the past six/seven years)

Today I turn 21! Today marks the fifth year of the passing of Mac Miller.

He has become one of my biggest inspirations, and one of the greatest rappers of all time (in my opinion, and likely the opinion of others as well). In my freshman year of college, I took a speech class, in which I gave a series of speeches about Mac Miller and his impact on me, as well as the music community. His music wasn’t just music, but true art. Regardless of what he was to some people or others, he was a representative of mental illness to everyone. He hurt, and he is comfort for others who hurt. When Mac Miller passed, he was only five years older than I am now. He did so much during his short life, and I see his legacy living on every day.

The late Malcolm McCormick reminds me every single day to get shit done. He was so dedicated to his art. I truly wish to be as hardworking and successful as he was, whether it’s within the next five years or the next 50. He should still be here, creating, and I have such a heavy heart that every year on my birthday, I’m reminded of how much I wish Mac Miller was still here.

His lyrics have resonated with so many people since 2010. He represents so much for so many different people. For me, Mac Miller represents dedication, art, and strength. His music has become such a comfort for me. Turning 21 has me thinking about where my life is going. Miller was only five years older than I am now when he passed. If I only have five years left, I have nothing to show for my life. Life is truly short. No one cares about what you’re going to do, but what you actually get done. Mac Miller’s art inspires me to do something powerful with my life. Not necessarily powerful regarding others opinions, but meaningful to me, and shows who I am as a person.

Make sure to check out my Spotify to see everything that I've been listening to.

Listen to Mac Miller.

xoxo,
